Travertine Holds Onto Dirt in a Way Other Stone Doesn't

Travertine is naturally full of tiny pits and holes, formed as the stone develops, which gives it that distinctive textured look. Those same pits are also where dirt, body oils, and everyday grime tend to collect and stay put. On a flatter, less porous surface, a mop pass can lift most of what's sitting on top. On travertine, buildup works its way down into those pores where routine cleaning simply can't reach it.

If your travertine looks consistently dull or slightly gray no matter how often it's cleaned, that buildup living inside the stone's natural texture is usually the reason, not a lack of effort on your part.

Why This Buildup Happens

Every type of natural stone reacts differently to moisture, cleaners, and agitation, and travertine's open, pitted structure makes it more absorbent than denser stone like granite or engineered surfaces. Body oils, tracked in dirt, and everyday residue settle into these pores and, left alone, continue to build up layer after layer. Many travertine installations are also filled with a resin or grout based filler at the time of installation to smooth the surface. That filler wears down over years of use, and once it does, the open pores underneath become even more exposed to ongoing buildup.

Standard mopping and most household cleaners aren't built to reach what's sitting inside these pores, and using the wrong product can make the problem worse by dulling or damaging the surface while trying to clean it.

What Type Of Service?

Our Process for Travertine

We tailor our cleaning approach to the specific stone in your home rather than using a one size fits all method. For travertine, that means stone safe, pH neutral solutions that break down residue, body oils, and tracked in dirt collecting both on the surface and inside the stone's natural pores. Gentle agitation and controlled rinsing allow us to lift embedded debris without scratching, etching, or dulling the finish, which matters most on a softer, more porous stone like travertine.

After cleaning, we select and apply a sealer based on your travertine's porosity, how the space is used, and its everyday exposure to moisture. A proper seal creates a protective barrier that helps slow the absorption of spills and contaminants going forward, particularly important in kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways where travertine sees the most use.

A Note on Pitting and Fill Loss

If your travertine has open pits where the original filler has worn away, our cleaning and sealing process will not replace that filler or resurface the stone, we don't perform sanding or refinishing. What we can do is thoroughly clean out debris that has settled into those open pores and apply a sealer suited to that level of exposure, which helps slow future buildup even where filler has been lost.
